The season of anti-allergy medication is here. For me, it is like when I was studying and had to enroll in classes. You cannot fail because there is a due date, and you’d better act on time. As a member of the allergy-sufferer team of Kansas myself, I suggest that the best you can do is take care of the problem early, or you will be a member of those showing watery eyes, a stuffy nose and having your customary frog in the throat, croaking in a local chorus.
You will notice that TV commercials tell you to ask your doctor if any of the advertised medications is for you. I saved time and gas by going directly to my doctor, Armando Pérez in Dodge City. This way, I knew I have to take certain anti-allergics all year-round.
Now I review my memories when I used to belong in a high category among the sufferers, and I can't help but remember that I was counted among the most distinguished members of the "stuffy nose club." And that in the spring season of 2000, I became the state queen of the watery eyes.
Spring brings water in the form of money-saving rains. Green pastures and flowers are a charming testimony. People —ladies, most of the time — sit on the ground "cultivating" their dandelions. Green healthy lawns grow in the cracks of driveways and sidewalks. We see rumbling dark clouds, impressive lightning, unwanted floods, a lot-of-miles winds and running noses.
This is the season you play with your heater and air conditioner, trying for a "medium-well" (no, not a steak, but the temperature) to get the right ambiance for your sleeping hours. But I, for instance, have a bull's-eye for a warm temperature inside when it is warm outside and vice versa. I spend the night either half-baked or frozen. It's difficult to fight 50 degrees outside with the right temperature at home.
Something else to notice in this spring of ours is the persistent wind in charge of our hairdo. If you don't like the style, think it is free and will last all day unless you find in your way a comb or a hair brush. But even so, chances are the wind is still out there waiting for you.
When I am watching on TV the path of destruction left by high winds or worst, I appreciate our winds with their lenient consequences. Notice that in this world, there is always something to be grateful for — our winds, in this case. Another spring extravaganza is the heavy rains when we hate to end up with wet shoes. Keep in mind, however, that elsewhere there are guys every day who are caught in their cars in currents impossible to control. This is a reason for making you love light rain and your wet shoes.
During the rainy season, be a good planner in washing your car, letting the dog out of the house, leaving your windows open, taking your umbrella with you, leaving sprinklers on and/or forgetting to replace your windshield wipers.
Flowers are a deserved break to make us forget spring hardships. One, their colors painting the gardens will restore your faith in the season. The second could be the aroma. Stop, don't trespass. The delightful smell can make your eyes watery, your nose run, bring the frog back to your throat, cause headache or two and bring a bill for your anti-allergic blessings.
The beauty and the beast are loose!
