I am writing in response to the "Nation is sliding into disaster" column. I agree the nation is sliding into disaster when you have people like Pat Robertson proclaiming the Haitian earthquake is due to a pact Haiti made with the devil. These are also the same people that believe that you cannot be a "real" Christian unless you are a conservative Republican.
It is because of the mess caused by the conservative right that you can't even walk down the street without being hassled by police, as most of our basic civil liberties and rights have been taken away by conservative interest groups. And as far as left-wing radicals go, maybe we need some left-wing radicals in this country to balance the ship a little.
The problem with the conservative right is that it is no longer politics anymore and respectful differences of opinion. It's personal. Just by being a Democrat, you are labeled as un-American and a traitor by the conservative right. If they had their way, every Democrat and liberal-minded thinker would either by shot by a firing squad or exiled to some uninhabited desert island. But you have to remember, these are the people that believe a plant is more dangerous than a gun.
