As readers, some of us read to learn and to educate ourselves. Others read for fun, which means there are two kinds of reading: One is formative and educational, and the other is not.
When I say formative, I refer to the content of the material — to the essential and valuable information that reading may convey to you. Unfortunately, modern readers read more for fun than for education.
French novelist Gustave Flaubert wrote, “We must read in order to live,” but today’s readers have turned this concept into “Read in order to have fun.”
A 2007 research report from the National Endowment for the Arts revealed that Americans now spend less time reading and a majority of them read more fiction, which is not an educational kind of reading, much like today’s movies.
