3 Demon runners make state

Most members of the Dodge City High School Red Demon cross country teams finished their seasons Saturday at the regional meet in Wichita. Maria Schmidt qualified for the state meet on the girls' side, and Peter Neidhart and Joe Butcher qualified on the boys' side.
    The Demons boys team finished fourth in the team standings behind Haysville Campus, Derby and Wichita East. Neidhart finished the 5k ninth overall in 17 minutes, 48 seconds. Butcher finished 18th and snuck into the state meet by finishing in 18:17.
    Demon freshman Fred Ruiz missed out on state by one second and placed 20th at the regional meet in 18:21. Fellow freshman Spencer Barry placed 24th by finishing in 18:30.
    Schmidt also placed ninth individually in the girls' meet, finishing in 16:25. Yael Felix finished 23rd overall in 17:15. Mariah Hostetler placed 30th with her 17:36.
    The state meet will be held Saturday at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence.
