    Dodge City High School head football coach Justin Burke wasn’t available to chat over the weekend.
    After all, it was the opening weekend of pheasant hunting in the state.

DCMS wrestling has tough weekend

    On Saturday, the Dodge City Middle School Cardinals wrestling team was back in action at the Liberal Dual Tournament. 
    Dodge City finished 1-4 in the team tournament format. Despite what their record showed, the Cardinals wrestled hard against some stiff competition, according to DCMS head coach Justin Coffey.

DERBY —

    Nothing seemed to go right for the Dodge City High School Red Demons on Friday The 13th.
    As a result, Derby, leading 7-0 at halftime in a Class 6A state playoff game, got a pair of third-quarter field goals from placekicker Mason Young and a 21-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tyler Harrison in the fourth quarter to post a 19-7 victory.

Meade can't stop the unstoppable

SMITH CENTER —

    No matter how hard they tried, the Meade High School Buffaloes couldn’t overcome deja vu to break Smith Center’s  winning streak Friday night.
    Smith Center held off Meade 10-0 in a Class 2A state football playoff game to earn its 78th straight victory, the longest among 11-man teams in the nation.

    Advancing to the Class 6A state football playoff version of the Elite Eight is not enough.
    The Dodge City High School Red Demons (8-2) have won four straight and seem hell-bent on advancing to the 6A semifinals and a home date next Friday against unbeaten Manhattan (10-0).

Toughest Test

    Word out of Smith Center High School is that the unbeaten Redmen are not as unconquerable as the previous five seasons in which they won the Class 2A state football championship.
    Still, Smith Center (10-0) is top-ranked, unbeaten and currently maintaining the longest winning streak in the nation among 11-man teams at 77 games.

Demons take on dangerous Derby

    In this his fourth season at Derby High School, head coach Brandon Clark has built the Panthers into a winner.
    Derby (7-3), which has advanced to the Class 6A state football playoffs in each of the last three seasons, entertain Dodge City (8-2) Friday night at Panther Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7.
