The Dodge City Red Demons boys and girls basketball teams are 0-2 and 1-1 respectively, to start the season.

Both teams head to Hugoton, Kansas today to face the Hugoton Eagles after having fallen to the Junction City Bluejays and the Manhattan Indians so far this season.

For the Lady Demons, junior Madison Armstrong and sophomore Chidera Okoro lead the team with 14 points through the first two games.

Part of the reason for the 0-2 start for the boys team has been the level of competition the team has faced, boys head coach Tony Starnes said.

“The kids are playing really hard,” Starnes said. “We’ve played good people, it’s not like we’ve played a couple of not very good team.”

Manhattan’s boys team made it into the state tournament last year, while their girls team is the defending 6A State Champion.

Both are still athletic, as is Hugoton who the team faces today.

“They’ve been good in the past and from what we’ve seen they’re good now,” Starnes said. “It’s gonna be a good challenge on the road, no question about it.”

The team, Starnes said, doesn’t have a lot of quit in it. The boys are all playing hard and of good character he said. They just are going through the learning curve of learning new schemes while competing against quality competition.

“Although I want to win as much as anyone, I think these challenges are going to help us in the long run,” Starnes said.

And that has him confident this year’s team can be good, especially after scoring well in the first quarter of Friday’s loss to Manhattan, even if they didn’t score as well in the last three.

“(We) kind of put on a clinic in the first quarter,” Starnes said. “We’re getting there, little by little, and if people have a little bit of patiences with us and them, I think the finished product is gonna be OK.”

The Red Demons girls basketball team takes on Hugoton at 6:30 p.m. tonight, while the boys start at 8.

Both teams return home for games against Eisenhower on Friday. The girls game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m., while the boys game is scheduled to start at 7:30.
