The Dodge City Red Demons bowling team hosted a dual Tuesday night, taking on the Great Bend Panthers.
The teams split the night, with Dodge City’s boys team falling 3028 to 2459, but with the girls winning by a score of 2342 to 2246.
“Coming in today we knew that the Great Bend boys would be very solid as they return the nucleus of their varsity team and we’ve got some young kinds in some new positions this year,” head coach Tyson Clark said. “We had got off to a rough start but we got better as the day went on, and hopefully on the boys side we just continue to grow.”
The girls side went a little better, both because the girls team won, and because senior Makayla Burton had both the high game and high series of the day among varsity girls.
Still, the team still had things they could have done better.
“On the girls side, we didn’t quite start out the way we wanted to but we responded well and finished the day strong,” Clark said. “This group of girls are, for the most part, veterans and been in the positions before, but being at home, (in the) first tournament at home is kind of tough, and hopefully we just learn from it and keep getting better.”
The team had opened its season Saturday in Wichita, Kansas, but this was the first “regular” meet for them. Clark said it was good to get the jitters out of the team with this event.
“It’s always good to get your first regular meet under your belt,” Clark said. “We went to Wichita Saturday but that’s a lot different format, and now we’re into the regular format of the tournaments, and we’ve just gotta build on it. We’ve a week to get better, practice and go down to Liberal and see what happens.”
The teams will next be in action next Tuesday, when they head to Liberal, Kansas.
