The Dodge City Red Demons wrestling team won its third competition in a row, beating the Hays Indians by a score of 38-24 Tuesday night.
Dodge City had beaten Garden City, then won the Maize Invitational before Tuesday night's victory.
Next up on the schedule is the Newton Invitational, where the team finished third last year.
“I thought overall we wrestled really well,” head coach Lars Lueders said.
Some of the wrestlers came out a little too-hyped, he said, though all the wrestlers wrestled hard.
“They got too amped-up, and came out a little quote-unquote ‘spazzy,’ I would say,” Lueders said. “They’re learning. They’re trying to learn how to stay consistent and things like that, but overall I was pleased with our performance, and Hays, they’re a solid team. Top-to-bottom they have guys that can wrestle.
Tuesday night’s win left the Red Demons in a good spot going into Newton, Lueders said.
“I feel great with where we’re at,” Lueders said. “I feel like over break we got to where we needed to be, and that was setup by our performance at Bishop Carroll, and we’re exactly where we need to be with our progression. So we need to come out strong Friday (and) Saturday, and then we have a week off where we can then work on building towards the end of the season and get ready to peak then.”
The Red Demons compete in the Newton Invitational this Friday and Saturday in Newton, Kansas. The event is scheduled to run Friday and Saturday.
