Both the boys and girls Red Demons basketball teams lost to the Hays Indians Friday night. The girls game was closer by far than the boys game, ending in overtime with the Lady Demons falling by just three points.
The boys game was a bit of a blowout, with Hays having gotten hot from 3-point territory early, taking a 30-12 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Indians had nine 3-pointers in the first half alone Friday, hitting 12 of 32 by the game’s end.
Here are some key Dodge City stats and a few thoughts, from Friday’s games.
The boys game:
Senior Kaden Riekenberg had his second-consecutive game with double-digit points, recording 12 after scoring 17 against Garden City earlier last week. It was his sixth game in double-figures and gave him 106 this season.
Red Demon senior Hunter Heath was another key offensive player Friday night. He had 17 points and 11 rebounds, recording his second straight double-double. He’s one of the strongest players on the team offensively, and has now had double-doubles in three of the last four games and four of the last seven.
Junior Noah Sowers had a quiet game point-wise Friday night, recording under 10 for only the second time this season while staying under his 15.9 points per game average this season. That didn’t mean he took the night off though. Sowers got eight rebounds against Hays, a personal-best for him this season. He also got seven defensive rebounds for the second straight game, tying his highest total of those so far this season.
The girls game
Normally I’d go in numerical order listing players whose stats stand out to me (as I’ve done above for instance). In this case though, I’m going to deviate from that with two words:
Okoro’s performance Friday night was among the best by a Lady Demon this season.
It was only the second time this season a Lady Demon has had a double-double, the first having been by junior Ezinne Okoro, who had 11 points and 11 rebounds back in December against Hugoton.
But Chidera Okoro’s 15 points and 13 rebounds against the Lady Indians stand out not just together but separately. Her 15 points were the most scored by any one Lady Demon in a game this season. Her 13 rebounds were the most rebounds pulled down by any one Lady Demon in a game this season as well.
The Lady Demons may have lost a close one in overtime Friday night, but Chidera Okoro had herself a game.
Another player who had quite a game was junior Caroline Williams. She had seven rebounds for the second straight time and for the third time in the last four games. She now has 47 rebounds this season, but 27 of those have come in those last four games. In that span, she’s averaged 6.75 rebounds per game, which is nearly double her season average of 3.35 per.
Despite playing only about 12 minutes Friday night, junior Payton Magouirk played well, hitting all three of her shots, two of which were 3-pointers to give herself eight points.
Junior Hayden Sanchez rounds out tonight’s list. Her nine rebounds Friday night were the second most by a player in the game, and her seven defensive boards were the game-high in that particularly category (Chidera had seven offensive, six defensive).
