After a 1-2 finish in Tuesday’s quad, the Dodge City Red Demons volleyball team turned it around, going 2-1 Thursday night.

The Red Demons beat Lakin by scores of 25-9, and 25-21, lost to Hays by scores of 18-25, 19-25, then beat Sublette 25-23, 25-9.

Red Demon head coach Ashley Podschun said the whole demeanor of the team was better Thursday night.

“We kind of went to practice on Wednesday and I talked to them about kind of refocusing and making sure that we make this year, our year, a different year,” Podschun said. “A lot of it was just the girls coming out ready to play, a little bit more energetic, having each other’s backs and that’s pretty much all you saw.”

The first set was against Sublette at the end of the night. Podschun said it was huge to see the team fight through against a Sublette. The Red Demons led by as much as 18-11, but that lead gradually dissolved, culminating with Sublette tying the game at 22-22, then again at 23-23.

“You see (the Red Demons players) get a big lead and then the kind of get in their little funk again, and they fought out of it,” Podschun said. “I just wanted to see them fight out of that again because it shows them that they can do it later on.”

In set two, the Red Demons kept it from ever getting close. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead before even allowing a point, then, after Sublette made it 3-1, Dodge City went on a 7-0 run to take a 10-1 lead. They won that set 25-9.

In the match the team lost, Hays and Dodge City went back and forth through early in the first set, but Hays took the lead at 10-9 and never relinquished it.

In the second set, Hays took the lead at 3-2 and never gave it up or even allowed Dodge City to tie the game.

It was a match Podschun said she would have liked a little better result from, but the team never gave up.

“I’m proud of them for that, because we were down quite a bit and we fought back in it,” Podschun said.

Overall, she said she was pleased with the team’s effort Thursday.

“Our hits were on point tonight, our serves again were fantastic, so we’ve just got a little tweaking here and there and we’ll be right where we want to be,” Podschun said.

The Red Demons now have a week off. They next take the court when they head to Liberal to take on the Redskins in a dual Sept. 13.
