Youth water safety classes begin Oct. 1 at the Dodge City Family YMCA. The deadline to register is Sept. 24. Classes will end on Oct. 24.

Class options include Parent-Tot Water Safety, Level 1 Water Acclimation for ages 4 and 5, and Level 2 and 3 Youth Water Safety for beginners.

Parent-Tot is for ages 6 months to 3 years. Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills. Parents learn about water safety and drowning prevention. Classes will meet from 6:10 to 6:40 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Water Acclimation for ages 4 and 5 focuses on increasing comfort with underwater exploration and basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance. Classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:10 to 6:40 p.m.

Youth Water Safety is split into two levels: Level 2 Water Movement and Level 3 Water Stamina.  Water Movement encourages forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently. Water Stamina develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages. Classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m.

Class fees are $20 for members, $30 for program participants/non-members, and $15 with proof of free/reduced lunches.

Scholarships are available for financial assistance with program fees. Program participants may pay the discounted member program fee by joining the YMCA.
