The Dodge City Community College Football team uses the summer for more than just getting in shape.
“The thing we do, we try to get a lot of our young guys to come in for summer school,” DCCC head coach Bob Majeski said. “The primary reason we do it is to get them ahead academically.”
The Conquistadors meet five days a week during a summer-school physical education class, which includes conditioning and lifting weights.
“We lift and we run to get them in physical shape, but the main thing you do (summer school) for is academically,” Majeski said. “To get them used to being away from home for the first time. Hopefully the home sickness they will get over and that way they are acclimated (by the time football season starts) because it is different.”
The DCCC P.E. class is open to the rest of the college, but currently only football players are participating. The class is not mandatory for players, and Majeski said about half of his team is enrolled.
“The thing is, we do not give full-ride scholarships,” Majeski said. “A kid in our program, like all the other (Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference) programs, get tuition and books. That is their scholarship. The thing is, you encourage them to come to summer school.”
The class has been in session for a little over a week.
Majeski said the team will start full practices for the season on Aug. 7, and will be in pads three days after that.
The Conquistadors start the season on Aug. 28 against Cisco in Cisco, Texas.
