The Dodge City Community College volleyball team knocked off Colby in four sets (25-12, 23-25, 26-24 and 25-21) on Wednesday night at the DCCC Gym.
DCCC head coach Shaun Pohlman said he was happy with the victory, but expected more from his team after winning three of four at the Laramie County Invitational in Cheyenne, Wyo., last weekend.
“Definitely coming from the competition we played and the way we were fighting and really playing on the road, this is a great disappointment,” Pohlman said. “I mean a win is always nice, don’t get me wrong. Who doesn’t want a win? We are 2-0 in conference and that is great, but not at the stake of being the better of the worst two teams.”
He added that it took a lot of mistakes from Colby to allow his team to win.
“Being able to win, there has to be a little luck in this, which is sad to say,” Pohlman said. “The chips fell in our favor just a little bit to many times.”
Beatriz Ferreira was the Lady Conquistadors with 16 kills on 31 attempts. Janelle Burnett was the top defensive threat with 19 digs and Rae Mulitalo had 27 assists.
The Lady Conquistadors started out on fire winning the first set 25-12. When Colby placed the score at 8-7, Dodge City finished off the set on a 17-5 run. In that set, Mulitalo helped lead Dodge City to several scoring streaks while she was serving.
Dodge City’s dominance did not continue, however, as Colby was able to win the next set. Colby took its first lead of the night going up 12-11 and Jordyn White helped add to the Lady Trojans lead with a service ace.
With several kills from Gabrielly Cardoso, Colby took the set 25-23 and Cardoso had the set-winning kill.
“We just got to take care of us and when we are not taking care of us, we are in trouble,” Pohlman said. “It is not me that is in trouble, it is the players out there. I can’t change what they are trying to do, that is for practice.”
Pohlman said he was disappointed with the loss because Colby had eight service errors in the set.
Dodge City looked to rebound from the lost and took a 17-11 lead in the fourth set, but it would not stick.
Colby’s Ana Calito spiked the ball over the net with a 21-21 tie to give her team the lead.
Dodge City’s Maggie Hans put Dodge City back on top shortly after with a service ace. The Conquistadors would not give up the lead for the remainder of the set.
Colby took an early 3-2 lead in the fourth set, but that was the last time of the night they would be on top of the scoreboard.
Dodge City will travel to Pratt on Saturday.
