When non-conference foe Colby High School made a run at Dodge City in the fourth quarter Thursday night on Homecoming, the Red Demons answered back.
A little earlier, Brenna Briggs. a sophomore southpaw, had a trio of second half 3-pointers. Moreover, DCHS held Colby scoreless during the opening five minutes of the third quarter, extended their lead to 14 points and coasted to a 48-31 victory.
Dodge City, ranked No. 7 in the latest Class 6A Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll, improves to 13-3 on the season.
4A Colby drops to 10-6.
After the Eagles closed the gap to 33-27 late in the fourth quarter, Dodge City senior Codi Ehrlich, who was later crowned as Homecoming Queen, converted four straight free throws, the first two coming at the 2:08 mark. Then sophomore Kesha Buckner hit a driving layup at the 1:40 mark for a 39-27 lead, and the knockout punch to Colby was served.
Brenna Briggs finished 5-for-9 on field goals, including 4-for-8 from long distance, and finished with a eason-high 17 points.
Valerie Ortiz added 11 points and A’zlynn Thompson scored eight points for Dodge City, which sank a collective 13-for-16 from the free-throw line
“We haven’t shot 80 percent from the free-throw line since our first game,” Dodge City head coach Justin Briggs said. “We’re averaging about 45 percent or below that.
“Tonight, we shot 83 percent and that was nice. We needed that.”
With the tempo of the game slowing in the second quarter, Dodge City lugged a 14-12 lead into halftime.
The Demons missed 22 of their 28 field goals in the first half, with forward Thompson scoring six points on 3-for-7 shooting. Other than Thompson, they struggled shooting early.
“We were pretty flat in the first quarter,” Justin Briggs said. “Give credit to Colby. I thought their defensive pressure was pretty good.
Dodge City scored the game’s first five points on a basket by Thompson and a 3-ball from the right-corner pocket by Brenna Briggs.
“She knocked down some big shots for us tonight, which is nice to see,” Justin Briggs said of his daughter. “I thought, overall, our team defense was hustling after loose balls and we were being smart on the defensive end.”
But Colby reeled off 10 unanswered points during the final 4:28 of the opening period for a 10-5 lead. Eagles freshman Alexa Haas came off the bench to knock down a 3-pointer from the right corner to start the run. Kayla Hockersmith also had a 3-pointer for Colby during its burst.
The Red Demons also scored the first five points of the second quarter to knot the score at 10. Thompson hit a jumper, along with Oritz hitting a 3 at the 4:25 mark in the period.
Dodge City is idle until next Tuesday, when it travels to Garden City for a Western Athletic Conference clash. The Demons lead the WAC with a 4-0 mark.
