After five seasons as the head coach of the Dodge High Red Demon baseball team, John Neill resigned Tuesday.
"It boils down to one of those deals that DCHS has high expectations for its baseball program," Neill told the Globe. "Those expectations weren't being met, so a change had to be made."
Neill guided the Demons to a berth in the Class 6A state tournament in 2006, but the team didn't fare as well in his final two seasons. The Red Demon baseball team went a combined 15-27 in 2008 and 2009, including losses at the regional tournament.
When asked if the DCHS athletic department had told him to step down, Neill declined to comment.
According to a press release from the athletics department, Neill will stay on as a physical education teacher.
"For now, that's the plan," Neill said. "If that perfect job comes along, we may possibly be leaving, but my wife and I like it in Dodge City, and it's a good school district to work for."
DCHS athletic director Jay Gifford added: "The DCHS athletic department appreciates the dedication demonstrated by coach Neill during his tenure as a coach in the baseball program to the program and the student-athletes of Dodge City High School."
