It had been 13 years since they had been to Class 2A state volleyball tournament.
And on Friday, the pressure might have been too much for the Spearville Lancers as they lost all three matches in pool play.
"We lost all three," Spearville coach Kristen David said. "I think we were a little too nervous. But it was a great experience and they played really hard in every set."
Spearville started the day against Blue Rapids-Valley Heights, and lost in two sets 25-20, 25-22. Its second match was against Salina Sacred-Heart, which it also lost in two sets, 25-20, 26-24. For the third and final match, the Lancers took on Oberlin-Decatur Community and lost 25-23, 25-15.
"In my truthful opinion, there were a lot of good teams there," David said. "I think we could have beat any team there if we had played our game. The mistakes cost us."
David said that the mistakes the Lancers made were mistakes that come from lack of state experience. She also said that they know what they need to do to win state next year.
Megan Stein, Alison Helfrich, Elle Stein and Jessica Konrade all stood out to David during state play.
"Megan played amazing," David said. "Her kills and blocks were unbelievable. Alison had great defense. Elle also had amazing kills and blocks. Out setter, Jessica, she handled the pressure the best."
Even though David said she feels some disappointment at being eliminated so early, she was proud of every thing the Lancers did this season.
"I am so happy with the season," David said. "We went 31-10, we won the league, we won sub-state and went to state for the first time in 13 years."
She said they had to learn how to play as a team this year, and the fact that they did is a huge accomplishment.
"We had some awesome leaders," David said. "I'm pumped about next year. This team is going to have talent for years."
