Ashland High School football coach Matt Scripsick says his team hasn’t been tested the last several weeks.
That might change tonight, when the unbeaten Blue Jays (9-0) collide with South Barber-Kiowa (6-3) at 7 in Ashland in an Eight-Man Division II bi-district playoff game.
“We’ve beaten a lot of teams soundly,” Scripsick said. “Our tougher competition was at the start of the football season and so that’s one thing ... have we really been tested again? I don’t know.
“Hopefully, it will be a great test (tonight) and we can pass it. Can we walk over them? I think it’s going to be a tough battle.”
South Barber has lost all of its games to state-ranked teams — Quivira Heights, South Haven and Argonia.
Ashland is led in rushing by Ben Fox, who has totaled 628 yards in 86 carries. As a team, the Blue Jays have 1,501 yards.
Blue Jays quarterback Corey Stebens has thrown for 993 yards on the season.
Stebens has completed 68-of-129 passes for 52.7 percent accuracy and 13 touchdowns compared to only four interceptions.
Fox also leads the team in receiving with 317 yards on 18 catches. He has caught six touchdown passes to go along with his 13 rushing touchdowns.
Ervin Swonger, who returned the opening kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown last Thursday during Ashland’s 44-6 shellacking of South Central, has 14 catches for 225 yards and fourth scores.
After beating Hill City, 24-20, and Jetmore, 28-12, to open the season, the Blue Jays have scored 32 or more points during six of their wins.
In Week 4, Ashland won by forfeit over Ingalls, 2-0.
The Blue Jays’ biggest margin of victory came two weeks ago during a 70-22 annihilation of Fowler.
