The South Gray Runnin' Rebels girls basketball team defeated the Spearville Lancers 71-43 Tuesday to record its 29th consecutive win and improve its season record to 5-0.
The Rebels used their familiar game plan of pressuring the ball and manufacturing turnovers into fast break opportunities to jump out to a 23-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
But the Lancers did not simply roll over. In the second quarter, Spearville handled the Rebel pressure defense with good passing that created open shots. The Lancers hit enough jumpers to outscore South Gray in the second period and go into the intermission trailing 39-26.
Spearville moved to within eleven points early in the second half, but South Gray scored the last nine points of the third period and opened the fourth quarter with a 10-2 run to put the game out of reach.
South Gray head coach Tasha Trundle said the length of the Spearville players on the low block created some matchup problems for her team, which is not especially big.
“They were bigger than us at every spot which is something we're really not used to,” Trundle said. “They were getting stick-backs when they missed a shot and that hurt us.”
The Spearville size also caused problems for the Rebels press.
“They had us mismatched on our press because they had a post player bringing the ball down the floor, so I had a guard on her and we had a mismatch inside,” Trundle said. “After they would beat the press and kick it back out, our adjustment wasn't what it needed to be. I had a talk with our guards at halftime and after that they did well. When we didn't run the press our halfcourt defense rocked.”
Rebel senior Kelli Watts led all scorers with 22 points. Juniors Kayla Thomas and Brigit Hesser chipped in with 17 and 15 points respectively.
The Lancers were led by Megan Stein and Becca Hornung-Heeke with 14 points each.
Spearville head coach Lori Stein said the number of weapons on the South Gray roster was too much for her young squad.
“We did a lot of things right — we handled their press well,” Stein said. “I thought we played well, we hung with them, we were only down 11 in the third quarter. But they just have so many good shooters.”
Spearville drops to 1-4 on the season after the loss. The Lancers will host the Minneola Wildcats Friday, while the Rebels have a home date scheduled with the Ingalls Bulldogs.
Tipoff for both games is scheduled for 6 p.m.
