Hitting the Manhattan High School Lady Indians from all directions in overtime, Dodge City pulled out a 54-50 win Saturday night.
Valerie Ortiz totaled 17 points, Brenna Briggs scored 11 and Keasha Buckner put in 10 for the balanced Red Demons (2-0). A'zlynn Thompson added seven points and nine rebounds, and Codi Ehrlich had nine boards and five points.
Late in the fourth quarter, Ortiz, a senior guard, hit two free throws at the 3:18 mark and then dropped in a 3-pointer only 49 seconds later, tying the game at 40.
After Manhattan went ahead 42-40, Buckner hit a game-tying, twisting layup off a fast break at the 1:22 mark.
But the game went into overtime tied at 42 after Dodge's Teghan Pencis had a shot from underneath roll off the rim and then Manhattan's Toya Nelson missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
In overtime, Pencis scored inside at the 2:50 mark for a 44-42 DCHS lead. Briggs, who knocked down 5-of-10 shots from the floor, then added a bucket after an MHS turnover at the 2:28 mark for a 46-42 lead.
Nelson made a pair of free throws to again make it a two-point game, but Buckner's basket with 1:57 left gave the Demons a 48-44 lead.
