Ashia Woods of Wichita Collegiate High School is everything as billed.
A bona-fide NCAA Division-I prospect as a junior, Woods, a 5-foot-11 forward, bailed out her team every time Dodge City made a run Saturday night at the Collegiate Field House. She scored a game-high 22 points, grabbed eight rebounds and made eight steals in a 47-41 victory over the Red Demons (3-2).
“We missed a lot of opportunities,” DCHS head coach Justin Briggs said. “We missed three easy baskets we should have made, but overall I thought we played pretty well. It was a back-and-forth game the whole time.”
“Ashia Woods, she averages 19 points and she got 22. She’s pretty good. She did some nice things inside and made 8-for-11 at the free-throw line.”
Collegiate (4-1), ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, withstood everything the Red Demons threw at them, including a 39-33 Dodge City rebounding average and an eight-point, four-assist, 13-rebound performance by Dodge City junior forward A’zlynn Thompson before she fouled out in the fourth quarter.
“She was a force inside and did a good job for us,” Briggs said. “I thought Brenna (Briggs) played pretty well and knocked down some 3s and got a layup off a break.”
Dodge City guard Brenna Briggs had a trio of 3-point hits and finished with a team-high 13 points. Backcourt mate Valerie Ortiz had 10 points, and the two players each had four rebounds and three assists.
Leading 25-21 at halftime, Collegiate outscored DCHS 6-5 in a low-scoring third quarter before holding off the Demons with a 16-15 run during the final eight minutes.
