In a Western Athletic Conference rivalry game between Dodge City High School and Garden City, a 12-0 decisive run extending from the second quarter into the third was the difference.
Dodge City's girls scored the final seven points of the second period and then tacked on the first five points of the third quarter to open up a 32-20 lead en route to a 57-42 victory Tuesday night at the DCHS Fieldhouse.
For good measure, the Red Demons went on a 9-2 run during the final 2:47 of the third period to extend the margin to 41-26, making their conference opener a successful one in improving to 4-2, 1-1.
"We came out with a little more intensity in the second half and picked up our defense, especially on our press, and got some easy baskets," Dodge City head coach Justin Briggs said. "With our loss (to Wichita Collegiate) the other night, I believe that game prepared us for tonight.
"We kind of knocked some of the rust off and got back into it. Garden has almost had a month off and I think that helped us."
Garden City (2-4, 0-1) went on a 10-0 run late in the game to carve the margin to 51-42 before Dodge City scored the final six points of the game.
Senior guard Valerie Ortiz scored 11 of her 18 points after halftime, knocking down 7-of-13 shots, including 2-for-5 from downtown.
Ortiz had four points, A'zlynn Thompson added a three-point play and Teghan Pencis scored inside during their late third quarter burst to put it out of reach.
Thompson, a junior post player, narrowly missed a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing 11 rebounds, along with blocking five shots.
"Without a doubt, I think she was part of the reason in the third quarter, especially when we started pressing and putting her up on the point," Justin Briggs said. "She caused trouble for (Garden) in the backcourt."
Guard Brenna Briggs also had nine points, including six in the second half, and guard Keasha Buckner had eight points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Demons, who are idle on Friday before entertaining Maize South next Tuesday.
The Lady Buffaloes were led by Carly Schmale with 17 points and Syd Sassaman scored 15.
Garden City couldn't keep up with the Demons pace, let alone their full-court pressure that induced the Lady Buffaloes into 21 turnovers, including eight in the third period when Dodge pulled away.
The cold-shooting Lady Buffs were only 15-for-48 from the floor (31.3) percent, and made just 3of-23 3-pointers. DCHS made 22-of-51 shots from the floor (43.1 percent).
Dodge City used a 7-0 surge during the final four minutes of the second quarter, capped by Brenna Briggs' 3-pointer, to take its seven-point lead into intermission.
Dodge led 5-1 out of the gate on Ortiz 3-pointer before Garden City forged ahead 12-9 late in the opening period on a 3-pointer by Sassaman. DCHS regained the lead at 15-12 at the end of the quarter.
The Red Demons limited Garden City to just 8-for-25 shooting from the floor (32 percent) in the first half, including 2-for-11 from 3-point land.
In the meantime, Dodge made 11-of-24 shots from the floor in the first half.  Buckner and Ortiz each scored seven first-half points and helped push the issue in establishing its transition game.
"That's one thing we talked about," Briggs said. "We wanted to get the ball up the floor into our transition offense. I think with our guards, I like to think that we we can pretty much run with anybody.
"They stepped up and did a good job for us."
