A year ago, Dodge City defeated Wichita Southeast 26-3, but since then, a lot has changed.
“I am smart enough to know I would never mention that score,” Foster said. “It has no relevance to this football team. I have been on teams that have been on the losing end one year and the next year you comeback and beat the snot out of somebody. To compare two separate years with two separate graduating classes, would be crazy and I am not crazy.”
The Red Demons enter their season opener against Southeast on Friday night at Memorial Stadium after losing its head coach, starting quarterback, leading receiver, leading rusher and top tackler form last year’s squad.
“It is an exciting time,” Foster said. “Dodge City High School is coming off a very solid year a year ago, having graduated a good group of seniors, which presents a great challenge for us.
“These kids are a new football team. A new year, means a new group of kids. We have a lot of kids that have worked extremely hard in the offseason and the kids have practiced hard the three previous weeks and it is time to show what our practice has come down to.”
At least one Demon player expects this Dodge City squad to do even better against the Buffalo team from a year ago.
“I think we are going to run the score up even more,” tailback Matt Esquibel said. “They might get a touchdown, but I don’t know.”
Wichita Southeast will bring a team to Dodge City that features several players that earned All-City honors a year ago.
“We know we are going to have to play extremely hard,” Foster said. “That is the biggest thing I want to leave every Friday night knowing, our football played as hard as they possibly can.”
Six-foot-3-inch Nick Taylor will give the Golden Buffaloes a tall wide out to throw to. Other All-City players include: linebacker Tyrone Metcalf, lineman Kenneth Sellers and tight end Brett Bluma.
The Demons will have a new man under center as Jared Helfrich takes his first start at quarterback after waiting in the wings behind Ty Thomas.
“We got a lot of lineman coming back and that is a big part,” Helfrich said. “We got a lot of skill players and we are ready to prove our selves.”
Esquibel, who spent most of the season playing linebacker a year ago, said he was expecting to take most of the carries on offense on Friday, with the graduation of last year’s tailback Jace Banner.
“It is some big shoes to fill, but I think we can handle it,” Esquibel said. “We have the power and strength.”
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. as the Red Demons look to build on the success they had a year ago, going 8-3.
“I think from what we have done in practice, we are ready to go and we will show it Friday night,” Esquibel said. “We are going to put our hearts out and battle every play.”
