Dodge City High School head coach Dave Foster said his team worked hard the entire game Friday night, and it showed as the Red Demons defeated Wichita Southeast 40-7 at Memorial Stadium.
“I told the players before the game and at halftime, ‘You don’t just play to win, you play to perform as well you can as a football team,'” Foster said. “One thing I felt like we did through and through during the football game was the effort was there. We are not going to be 100 percent crisp in week one, but it leaves you something to work on. I am proud of the effort.”
The Demons racked up 382 yards of total offense and scored six touchdowns in the blowout win to start the season 1-0.
Dodge City could not have asked for a better start to the game.
On the first play on offense, junior Trey Hallman took the ball on a reverse and ran it 59 yards for a touchdown.
On the Demons' first play on defense, Bruce Campbell sacked Southeast quarterback Tevin Parks for a 7-yard loss. The defense stayed strong and forced a three-and-out.
After the first Demon series on offense, Southeast slowed down the pace and did not allow Dodge City to score for the remainder of the first quarter.
Halfway through the second quarter, Dodge City went with a high-tempo, no-huddle offense. It worked as the Demons marched 88 yards on 10 plays, and sophomore tailback Parker Davis pounded his way into the end zone on a 5-yard dive. That would be his first of two touchdowns.
He finished the night with 76 yards on 11 carries.
With less than two minutes left in the half, Hallman struck again on a trick play, taking the pitch on a hook-and-ladder 60 yards for his second touchdown. The score put the Demons up 20-0 at the half.
“I thought it was going to be there. Right when he caught it and pitched it, I knew I was gone,” Hallman said. “Occasionally we run it in practice, but we did not know if we were going to run it in the game or not. (When they called it), I got really happy and I knew I was going to score.”
The play started with Jared Helfrich throwing the ball to Taylor Murphy 10 yards downfield. Murphy then tossed it to Hallman, who had nothing but open daylight in front of him.
The Buffaloes drove the ball 12 yards on their second drive of the second half and were stopped on their own 42, but they punted the ball to the Dodge City 1-yard line.
The defense kept Dodge City from getting away from its own goal line, forcing a punt where the Demons received the ball on the Dodge City 24.
On the first play, Parks threw the ball to a streaking Qualan Nolan for the Buffaloes' first touchdown, placing the score at 26-7.
Dodge City responded with a touchdown of its own as Helfrich hooked up with Garrett Salem from 19 yards out.
It finally seemed as though Southeast had figured out the Dodge City defense, driving 80 yards to the Demon 15 in the fourth quarter. But Rico Hogan intercepted Parks' pass at the 5-yard line and ran it back for the game’s final touchdown, giving the Demons a 40-7 lead.
“Hopefully we can keep it going for the rest of the year,” Hallman said.
