Today, the Dodge City High School football coaches will get a look at the 2011 squad. The team will be taking the field for the first time in full pads for the first fall scrimmage.
“Who can play with pads,” DCHS head football coach Dave Foster said. “That is what our scrimmage is about. And to see how kids fit. Some kids do really well till you get the gear on and some rise to the occasion.”
The Demons have been out battling the heat all week, taking in their first full five days of practice. And so far, Foster has liked what he has seen.
“Well, we’ve had a great first week. Best first week I’ve been around in 15 years of coaching,” Foster explained.
The big element that will be under the microscope today in the scrimmage is the quarterback battle. After the departure of Jared Helfrich, the QB spot is wide open.
The battle is between three players — sophomore Kelan Newton, junior Taylor Murphy and senior Brandon Blankman.
“Each of those players have strengths,” Foster explained.
The scrimmage starts roughly around 9 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. at Memorial Stadium.
