There would be no opportunity for last second heroics the second time the Meade Buffalo boys basketball team met the South Gray Rebels this season.
The Rebels beat the Buffs 67-65 on a last-second Bligh Schulte leaner in last month's semifinals of the Cimarron Bluejay Invitational tournament. But the Herd got revenge Tuesday and stampeded to a 70-47 home win over South Gray.
The game started as the battle expected from the top two teams in the Southern Plains Iroquois Athletic Association with Meade leading 15-13 at the end of the first quarter.
But the second quarter was the beginning of the end for South Gray, as Meade started the period with a 17-0 run. The Buffaloes took a 36-19 lead into the intermission.
South Gray tried to regroup at halftime and scored the first eight points of the third period to pull within nine points, down 36-27. But the Rebels never got any closer than the eight point margin and trailed 51-37 going into the final period.
Meade head coach Dale Deighton was pleased with the way his team came back from the Holiday break.
“That was a big win to start with coming out of the Christmas break. South Gray is a quality team, they were undefeated coming in,” Deighton said. “We were pretty fortunate tonight to make enough shots to come out on top.”
Meade Senior Kyle Ross led a balanced Buffalo scoring with 18 points. Seniors Tanner Wiens and Brian Deighton contributed 13 and 12 points respectively.
Junior Chase Clancy carried the Rebel offense by scoring 24 points in the losing effort.
The Meade victory brings the team into a tie for first place in the SPIAA standings at 6-1. The Buffs now own the tiebreaker with the Rebels, as Tuesday's win came in league play.
South Gray coach Mark Applegate saw his team outscored for the first time this season.
“Meade is a tough team — we just didn't have any legs out there tonight. We were just tired and Meade played very well,” Applegate said. “We didn't execute offensively, we didn't block out, there weren't very many things we did right. We just flat got outplayed tonight.”
Meade travels to Jetmore Friday while South Gray will host Pawnee Heights.
