Saturday morning out at Memorial Stadium, the Dodge City High School football squad finally got a chance to take the field in full pads and go full speed against one another. The Demons took in their first fall scrimmage of the season, providing coaches a chance to see who shinned and what areas still need work before the season opener in a few weeks.
“It was alright. Just tried to work on some things, develop as a quarterback, try to develop some team bonding,” junior Taylor Murphy said after the scrimmage.
Murphy is in a three-way battle for the starting quarterback position after the departure of Jared Helfrich. The junior is up against senior Brandon Blankman, who was the backup last year, and sophomore Kelan Newton, who was the starting QB on the freshman team in 2010.
“There is a battle, but it’s a friendly battle,” Murphy said.
The nerves were there Saturday for some though.
“I did okay,” Newton said. “Didn’t do as good as I thought I would, but it was the first time going full pads and full speed.”
Murphy, who played wide receiver and defensive back last season for the team, said it has helped him at the quarterback position being a former receiver.
“When you play receiver you kind wish you knew what the quarterback was doing and now you know where to put the ball for the receivers and where to throw,” Murphy explained.
Both Murphy and Newton, however, said that they both need to develop and work on different assets on their game before the team takes in its next scrimmage Friday.
“Just keep working on my throwing and running,” Murphy said.
“Just learning all the new plays and learning what everybody is doing.”
Head coach Dave Foster said the plan is to have the starting quarterback named after Friday’s scrimmage.
