The Dodge City Community College women's basketball season has been a tale of ups and downs. The squad has experienced early success, rolling to easy wins.
However, the team will have to learn from their shortcomings if they want to achieve their ultimate goal during the 2011-2012 season.
During the Thanksgiving weekend, the Lady Conqs had a taste of both extremes Friday and Saturday night, they brought the heat for a double digit win against Lamar Community College, 73-61, but then went ice cold in Saturday's loss to Johnson County Community College, dropping that contest 76-53.
On Friday night, the Conqs used a blistering hot second half to derail the Lopes, outscoring them 48-28 for the 12-point victory.
The team was led by Je'nae Strong, who poured in 23 points on 8 of 23 shooting, also adding in eight rebounds.
Other strong performances were turned in by Kalyn Williams, who continues to establish herself as a mainstay within the Conq offense, throwing in 18 points and making the only three point basket of the night for Dodge. Also, Jazmin Villa went 6 of 10 from the free throw line to help with her game total of 10 points.
Defensively, the Conqs were outrebounded by the Lopes 44-34, but Lamar was forced into an astounding 42 turnovers, 18 of which were steals from the Conq defense. Williams had five steals, while Strong and Villa both contributed four a piece.
Unfortunately, the bounces stopped going in favor of the Conqs on Saturday, as the team managed to shoot only 32 percent from the floor (18 of 56) and were once again outrebounded in a 23-point defeat to the Johnson County.
The Lady Cavaliers shot 49 percent and were able to pour in nine three-point baskets.
The Conqs had two players in double figures, with Williams scoring 19 and Laquaris Harris with 10.
A night after forcing Lamar into 42 turnovers, the Conqs weren't able to find that kind of success against the Cavs, as they were only able to force them into 14 turnovers.
The Cavaliers were able to dish out 25 assists on their 32 made baskets, while Dodge had eight on their 18 makes, with four of them coming from Villa.
The 1-1 weekend record puts the Conqs at 5-4 overall and they will prepare for a battle Tuesday night with Oklahoma Wesleyan University JV squad in Bartlesville, Okla.
Then, on Dec. 2 and 3, the Conqs will take part in the McCook Classic in McCook, Neb., taking on North Platte Community College and McCook Community College. They will return for their next home game on Jan. 7 against Barton County Community College at the United Wireless Arena.
