After starting strong and getting a trio of dunks early on, it appeared that it might be Dodge City Community College’s night to pull an upset of eighth-ranked Hutchinson.
However, a jam session didn’t ensue.
Hutch, the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division leader, started lighting it up from downtown, seized away the Conquistadors early momentum and held off a late surge by DCCC for an 89-85 victory at the Dodge City Civic Center.
Hutch (22-2, 9-1) remains one game ahead of Butler atop the West standings. DCCC (16-8, 4-6), which sits alone in sixth place, lost its third conference game in the last five days.
The Blue Dragons, who hit 8 of 15 3-pointers, had seven players score nine or more points.
Guard Joe Mitchell and forward James Stewart led Hutch with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
DCCC forward Tyler Barnes scored a career-high 25 points, hitting 10 of 13 field goals, and grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
Chuck Coley and Matt Heydman each had 15 points, with Heydman sparking DCCC by knocking down 3 of 4 3-pointers.
Early on, Dodge’s full-court pressure transitioned into some easy buckets, including an early dunk by Coley and a Heydman one-handed jam off a Jordan Wilcox lob at the 14-minute mark for a 13-9 Dodge lead.
The Conquistadors extended their lead to 24-17 during the opening 12 minutes before Hutch flexed its muscle, answered back and built a 36-29 advantage at intermission.
Dodge spent much of the second half trying to catch up with the Dragons. It trailed 73-53 with 6:36 remaining and had a too-little, too-late run.
Down 82-70 at the two-minute mark, the Conquistadors scored 15 points down the stretch, frantically trying to trim the margin, but they came up shy.
