WICHITA — Rico Hogan had a trio of second-half 3-point hits — one in the fourth quarter — leading Dodge City High School past Wichita Sunrise, 44-40, Friday night in non-conference basketball action.
Hogan, a sophomore guard, finished with 20 points, hitting 4 of 7 3s and 8 of 11 free throws. Senior forward Terrance Williams finished with 13 for the Red Demons.
Rafael Akpejiori, a 6-foot-9 post player and an early signee with the University of Miami, led Wichita Sunrise with a double-double — 14 points and 10 rebounds.
“It was a huge win,” Dodge City head coach Dennis Hamilton said. “It was a playoff game atmosphere.
Rico hit some big 3s for us when we were kind of stagnant offensively. They were some big shots.”
The Demons hit 6 of 12 from beyond the arc.
“It was two teams playing a lot of zone,” Hamilton said. “(Sunrise) had a very active zone.
“It was a good win for us.”
DCHS, which improved to 12-2, host Hays Tuesday night.
