The Dodge City Community College softball team’s offense exploded in the first game of a doubleheader against Fort Scott.
The Conquistadors won 12-0 and received 11 runs in the third inning. Dodge City won the second game 6-4.
“I think mentally, it has given them some confidence,” Dodge City coach Howie Smith said. “Especially offensively, when we’ve struggled to score runs and have to put a premium on pitching and defense. … It shows we are capable of scoring runs and putting pressure on other teams for once.”
Dodge City’s Ashley Rains hit her first home run of the season with a grand slam in the third.
“The wind was blowing from center to left, and I did not think anyone was able to hit one out today,” Smith said. “I told her (before she went to the plate), you have to have a quality at-bat.”
Dodge City trailed 3-1 after two innings in the second game, but came back to win. Dodge City took the lead for good in the fourth scoring three runs.
The Conquistadors improved their record to 4-12 overall and 4-6 in conference. Fort Scott is now 3-11 and 2-8.
