The Dodge City Community College men's and women's soccer teams host their final home and regular season games of the year Wednesday night against Johnson County, with women losing their contest by a score of 2-0 and the guys won a thriller 2-1 in double overtime.
The Conquistadors headed into their season finale assured of making it into the regional playoffs on both sides.
For the women, they would capture the seventh seed if Garden City lost later Wednesday night and would sit in the eighth seed if Garden wins.
As for the men, with their victory on Wednesday, that assures them of at least the seven seed, with eyes still on Neosho and Hesston's game on Thursday.
Starting things off with the early Lady Conqs game, it was a match filled with missed opportunities.
"We just didn't finish a couple of the opportunities that we had," said head coach Tim Romanello. "And when you don't finish those opportunities against a really good side, very rarely are you going to end up on the right side of the scoreboard."
If Dodge City manages to slip into the eighth seed on the women's side, that would set them up for a Saturday home battle against Northwest Kansas Tech, which Romanello says is a disadvantage to them.  Romanello would prefer the Monday game time that would go to the seven seed.
Moving on to the men's side, their game against Johnson County would be a back and forth struggle from the opening kick.
Johnson would strike first with 22 minutes remaining in the first half as a Johnson attacker took advantage of Conq goalkeeper Rigo Sandoval, who charged an incoming pass, but was not quick enough as he watched ball float over his head and just into the net.
However, DC3 would equalize the score at one thanks to a nice run from Marcos Moreno, who's pass from the left wing found a sliding Manny Mondestin and into the twine to knot things up going into halftime.
The match would remain 1-1 throughout the second half as the temperature continued to drop.
Mikhail Kooh would send the patrons who braved the chilly conditions home happy as he would put in the game-winner with 16 seconds left in the second overtime to further cement their position in the regional.
Thanks to the Conqs burst of life late in the season, the squad will get to play at least one more game past the regular season, a feat Romanello attributes to the guys finally believing in one another.
"They finally realized the talent they have," Romanello said. "Before, it was the team thinking we have a lot of individuals and those individuals are going to carry us, but now they understand how well they can play together."
