After an emotional victory against Pratt on Thursday night, the Dodge City High School wrestlers traveled to Salina to take part in the Salina South Invitational.
The Demons have done well traditionally in this tournament, placing third in 2011 and winning the overall team title in 2010.
This time around, Dodge City finished up to par with expectations, ending up in a tie for third with Junction City with 109 total team points. The event was won by Manhattan as they ran away with the title, finishing 76.5 points ahead of the runner-up Colby.
Individually the Demons were led by their three big guns, Alex Garcia, Dane Edwards and Jacob Eggers, who are returning to the form that made them state place winners a season ago. Each wrestler took home a first place overall finish, winning their respective weight classes with records of 4-0 or better.
Not only did Eggers go 5-0 in the 160-pound weight class, he won all five of his matches by first period pins. The length of his longest match was 2:24 against Kaycee Wagner of Junction City, which was also a first period fall.
Other place winners for the Demons include David Montoya (106 pounds - 3rd), Jaquan Graves (120 pounds - 6th), Jhett Ostrom (145 pounds - 6th), Jimmy Ward (182 pounds - 6th), Freddy Hernandez (195 pounds - 4th), Francisco Serna (220 pounds - 6th) and Trae Phillips (285 pounds - 5th).
Next up for the Demons will be their first of three consecutive two-day tournaments as they hit the road to take part in the Newton Tournament of Champions on Jan. 13 and 14.
