This weekend, after a lot of effort by volleyball coach Shaun Pohlman and athletic director Howie Smith, Dodge City Community College will host the NJCAA Region VI Division volleyball championship tournament.
The tournament will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Dodge City Civic Center.
"I'm very proud of the coaches in the region," Smith said, "and Coach Pohlman deserves 90 percent of the credit. They liked what they saw from his proposal. Dodge City is so centrally located this is a great place to host the tournament."
This is the first time DCCC has played host to the tournament, which is usually held in Hutchinson.
Seven teams will compete, all wanting to take home the championship. The winner of the tournament will advance to the NJCAA national tournament.
Seward and Hutchinson come in as the top two seeds. Seward has a first-round bye after winning the conference.
The Conqs are 2-10 in the conference and 12-15 overall.
"We just want there to be some great crowds to watch some great volleyball," Smith said. "The Civic Center is a great place to have the tournament. If we get enough people to show support, we'll be able to keep this event in Dodge City. We want people to keep coming back."
