Colby Lady Trojans 60, Lady Conquistadors 56
Despite climbing back from a 15 point deficit early in the second half, the Dodge City Community College Lady Conquistadors fell just short for their 11th straight loss with a 60-56 defeat to Colby Community College on Saturday night.
The Conqs, who have been struggling to earn that first Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference win, had an early lead over the visiting Lady Trojans. Both teams were cold from the floor early on, making it anybody’s contest in a battle to get out of the cellar in the West Division.
After buckets from Je’nae Strong, Casey McCauley had the Conqs sniffing the lead, Dodge City hit their fatal cold stretch that allowed the Trojans to build a double digit lead. While the Conqs couldn’t buy a basket on one end, Colby seemed like they couldn’t miss on the other.
While the two squads battled it out for the majority of the half, the Conqs never let the lead get larger than 15, as the Trojans led 47-32 midway through the half. That is when the shorthanded Conqs would make their run toward their first conference win.
As the deficit reached 12 with two minutes to play, Dodge City put the pedal to metal and started clicking, holding the Trojans to 25 percent shooting in the second half. Key shots from Strong, their leading scorer, fueled the Conq comeback, as the lead shrunk to two within the final few seconds.
With an opportunity to steal victory from the jaws of defeat, the Conqs had one final shot at glory down by only two. However, their attempt to tie the game went begging, as the rebound found its way into the arms of a Trojan defender. Colby sank two free throws to seal the game.
Strong led all scorers with 20 points and eight rebounds, while McCauley chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds of her own. For the game, Dodge City managed 29 percent shooting from the field, while going 20-for-30 from the free throw line.
The Lady Conqs are now 8-17 overall and 0-11 in the KJCCC, as they hit the road on Wednesday to take on Pratt, looking for that breakthrough to bring the losing streak to a screeching halt.

The Dodge City Community College Conquistadors finally found the antidote for their losing woes, ending their six game losing streak by physically out-playing the Colby Community College Trojans, holding off a ferocious comeback and hanging on for the 69-66 victory in front of a pro-Colby crowd.
“There is no question right now that our defense is so much better than it was, we’re right back to where we were in November and we out-rebounded a very good rebounding team by 10 and that was one of the biggest keys,” said head coach Brady Trenkle. “We played hard and talked about so many things, if you watch us play, we’ve made a lot of changes. We have eliminated quick shots, we’re not trying to score 90 points, we want to keep it in the 60s and slow the game down.”
While nothing had gone in favor of the Conqs over the past couple of weeks, the team did a complete 180-degree turn against the Trojans. As Dodge City welcomed back Tramel White, the Conqs had a wake-up call in the first half, playing team basketball and hitting high percentage shots.
For the half, the Conqs sizzled, shooting 52.8 percent from the floor, while the visiting Trojans could only muster 28.1 percent. Colby nailed four threes in the first half, keeping them somewhat close on the scoreboard. Also, the Trojans nailed 10 of their 11 free throws, but the Conqs had a comfortable 10-point lead going into the locker room.
Against Barton, a team that averages close to 90 points per contest, Dodge City was able to hold them well below their season clip. On Saturday, the Conqs once again had the clamps on their opponent, holding their main scorers to dismal shooting percentages.
However, with seven minutes remaining, the Trojans began their assault on the Conq lead. Coupled with some turnovers from Dodge City, Colby was able to knock down a big three-pointer and cut the once sizable Conq lead down to three.
But, working behind their most balanced scoring attack of the season, Tyshon Pickett and Clarence Willard kept the Trojans at bay, hitting big buckets and playing large on defense to keep Colby from ruining their path back to the win column.
Up three with less than 10 seconds to play, Colby had one final opportunity to tie the game, but a deep three-point attempt rattled around both sides of the rim before falling harmlessly out to send Trenkle into a fist pump on the sidelines.
For the Conqs, they had five players score in double figures including White (15 points), Willard (13 points and six rebounds), Pickett (12 points and 12 rebounds), R.J. McGhee (13 points and eight rebounds) and Tony Phillips (10 points and seven rebounds). Dodge City out-rebounded a very lengthy Colby team by 10, holding the Trojans to 13 points below their season average.
“We had a wake-up call, we lost six games in a row and go from number one in the league to number seven and these guys don’t like to lose,” Trenkle said. “These guys didn’t understand why they were losing, so we started watching the film and they started letting us coach them. We’ve done more defensive drills in the last couple of days than we have in a long time. We have a whole different attitude right now, which is a big difference.”
With the win, the Conqs improve to 16-9 overall and are now 4-7 in the conference. Next up for Trenkle and company will be a road trip to Pratt to take on the 1-9 Beavers.
“I’m proud of my kids for what they did tonight,” Trenkle said. “To this point, for what we’ve been through, they’ve fought a lot.”
