It’s got to some type of defensive record, right?
The Dodge City High School boys’ basketball team limited winless Maize South to 13 points Tuesday night.
No, not 13 points in a quarter, but 13 for the entire game.
The defensive shutdown was the highlight as the Red Demons riddled the 0-9 Mavericks during a 54-13 win at the DCHS Fieldhouse
“I don’t know if that’s a school record or not, I guess there's a book somewhere where we can look that up,” Dodge City head coach Dennis Hamilton said. “We pride ourselves on defense, and we played a lot of kids, obviously.
“A lot of kids contributed and we didn’t lose our intensity defenisvely and that’s a positive.”
The Class 6A Demons, ranked No. 6 in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll, improved to 6-1 on the season. This game was a tuneup before DCHS gets back into Western Athletic Conference play on Friday at Great Bend.
Tuesday night, the Demons jumped out to a 10-0 and stretched the margin to 17-2 at the end of the opening period.
‘’You want to get off to a good start,’ Hamilton said. “You want to put a little bit of seed of doubt in their head and we did. We got off to a good start.”
Senior forward Terrence Williams scored a game-high 14 points, hitting 6 of 9 shots from the floor.
“He’s a basketball player,” Hamilton said of Williams. “He gets off the floor quick and he shoots the ball well enough to keep people honest and  he likes to defend.
“He’s a kid that a lot of younger guys in our program could model themselves after and take notes on how well he likes to play defense. Terrence is solid and he really is a fun basketball player to coach.”
As an oddity, sophomore guard Rico Hogan, the Demons’ leading scorer, didn’t break double figures in scoring for the first time all season.
Hogan finished with just three points, but it hardly mattered.
“Rico is an unselfish basketball player and he had to put that on the back shelf ... his scoring average and stats in this game. I can guarantee you one thing, that he will be there Friday night when we need him,” Hamilton said.
“He’s definitely a mainstay in our offensive scheme of things.”
