The Dodge City High School boys cross country team started out the season with a strong showing at the Bishop Carroll Invitational. The team finished third, 7 points out of second place behind Wichita North and winner Bishop Carroll, the number 1-ranked team out of 5A.
Dodge City was led by sophomore Oscar Carmona in fourth place with a time of 17:00.0, followed by freshman Luis Carmona in fifth place with a time of 17:07.0. Next for Dodge was senior Anthony Carmona with a time of 18:00.0, good for 17th. Junior Jonathan Rendon had a time of 18:30, placing 26th, and sophomore Elder Colindres placed 30th with a time of 18:50.0.
Coach Buc Bolmer said: “This was a good start to the season. This meet was a good first meet for us. It showed the boys some good competition to gauge themselves off of, it helped give them some confidence and it helped them define their goals and what they want to accomplish this season.”
The junior varsity team finished fourth on a two-mile course. They were led by Brennan Dewell, a freshman who finished seventh with a time of 12:18.0. Matt Pflughoeft, a junior, finished 14th with a time of 12:29.0, Carlos Mireles, a sophomore, finished 33rd with a time of 13:07.0. He was followed by Erick Chavez, a junior, also with a time of 13:07.0.
Joseph Stroud was the fifth scorer for the team with a time of 13:21.0, placing him at 40th.
Bolmer said: “I was happy with the effort put out by the JV team. Compared to last year at Bishop Carroll meet, the majority of the team improved on their time. That is what we are looking for, starting the season better than we were last year, and from here out I want to see all my runners improve on their times.”
