CIMARRON —   Cimarron High School handed Lakin its third straight loss on Friday night, winning 49-40.
The game started off like a 3-point contest with both teams sinking shots from behind the arch.
Lakin made the first two triples of the game to take an early 6-0 lead, but senior Janae Helfrich tied it up with two 3-pointers of her own. She sunk a third later in the quarter to give her team its first lead at 9-6.
Down by four at the end of the first quarter, Avery Burns got to the free throw line where she sunk both to put her team down by two.
Burns found Lindsay Wehkamp wide open under the basket to start the half. Wehkamp sunk the easy two and was fouled on the way and was able to sink the free throw to give the Blue Jays a 26-19 lead in early in the third quarter. Wehkamp continued to play aggressive getting fouled again and blocked a shot. She left the game with 4:30 in the third when she received her fourth foul.
Down 31-21 Lakin’s Samatha Kysar was able to put up four points in two trips down the court to narrow the Blue Jays lead to 32-25.
Allie Jones helped get Lakin back into the game by driving to the hoop and making lay-ups. She was fouled on one of the shots but could not follow up with a free throw.
“That gave us a little scare,” Wehkamp said. “We just had to come together and pick up the pace.”
Helfrich who did not make a shot since the first quarter, responded to the thought of a Lakin comeback with two quick baskets, then teammate

Burns got fouled and drained both of her opportunities from the charity stripe.
With Cimarron carrying a lead and Lakin looking to foul, Cimarron gave the ball to the sophomore, Burns. She attempted 12 free throws during the game and made all but one. Her performance at the line late in the game help secure a Cimarron victory.
