Spearville —

The South Gray Runnin' Rebels ran away with their home opener in Spearville Friday, literally. The Rebels racked up 202 yards on the ground to the Lancers' 39 in their 44-28 victory away from home.
"We spit and sputtered," said Spearville head coach Kelly Lampe. "But we were very aggressive  and I liked our intensity."
Lampe said that South Gray quarterback Chet Skinner was one of the best he saw in all of the 2007 season and that defending him Friday night was "like chasing a rabbit."
The teams felt each other out in the first quarter, as neither was able to put together a scoring drive. But South Gray put up 22 points in the second quarter on their way to victory.
"We had a couple breakdowns in pass coverage that hurt us," Lampe said. "We need to work on our coverage, but other than that I thought the defense played pretty solid."
The Lancers are still in somewhat of a period of flux offensively, Lampe said, as he switched some personnel around throughout the course of the game. Carson Konrade started the game at quarterback, but Ryon King replaced Konrade in the third quarter, which sent the Lancers on a run offensively in the fourth quarter.
"I think that move puts our personnel in a more conformable situation," Lampe said. "With Konrade as a wide receiver, you could immediately tell a difference in our offense, I think because he's a better receiver than a quarterback."
Lampe added that King would most likely start in week two, when the Lancers play host to the Ingalls Bulldogs.
Spearville was able to notch 16 points in the fourth quarter on two King touchdown passes, but were not able to come all the way back from behind.
"We learned a lot about our team tonight," Lampe said. "And we still think that we have a great chance to be a really solid team. I know the kids are disappointed but they see the big picture."
