After a pair of impressive victories to open the high school basketball season last weekend, Dodge City’s girls embark on their first road trip of the season.
The Red Demons travel to Newton for non-conference action on Friday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Backcourt play has been strong for Dodge. Senior guard Valerie Ortiz has found a rhythm with sophomore guards Brenna Briggs and Kesha Buckner
DCHS head coach Justin Briggs said he agrees.
“Especially our guard play,” he said. “Our underclassmen got a lot of experience last year, jus t from the fact that they moved up because of so many injuries.
“They gained a lot of experience last year, and it’s definitely going to help us this season.”
Ortiz, the team’s leading scorer last season, averaging 13.6 points per game, has averaged a team-best 16.5 points thus far.
Ortiz is complemented by the play of Briggs, who is averaging 11.5 points, and Buckner , who is averaging 9.5.
