Will Brack changed his luck at Dodge City Raceway Park on Saturday night, winning the Blood Sweat and Tears IMCA Modifieds Nationals.
“The track was awesome,” Brack said. “The track was smooth and you could go just about anywhere. There was cushion up top, but you could go low and get under somebody and pass them. It was nice, and smooth and racey.
“We have been here once and it was real rough. As long as it is not rough, this track is real awesome.”
Brack has only raced in Dodge City once in his seven-year racing career and did not finish in a race last year.
“I had bad luck last time,” Brack said. “It is good to come back here and change our luck a little bit on this track.”
When Brack got out of his car in the winner’s circle, Tristan Humphrey, who is a member of the pit crew, leaped into his arms in joy.
Brack, a 21 year-old driver, was in third early on, but moved into second place, passing Troy Gemmill with 22 laps to go.
He moved into first place pulling out of turn four two laps later. He remained in first for the remainder of the race.
“You never know because you don’t know if the track is changing, maybe somebody is getting faster on the bottom,” Brack said. “I was just trying to stay on the top, seemed like that was the best line. But when you are up front like that, you never know, somebody might be coming from the back, they might be running the very bottom and you never know until they pass you.”
Midway through, Brendon Gemmill got close to taking back his first-place position, but Brack held him off. Brendon Gemmill finished the race second and Troy Gemmill took third.
Brack will head to Hugoton for his next race.
Earlier in the night, Keith Estes took home first place in the sport-mods division.
Bart Baker led the race early on, but left the race with seven laps remaining with car problems.
Jeff Kaup then took over the lead, but with a few laps left, Estes moved into first place.
Brian Sauser took first in the stock-car division and Reagan Seueid won the thunder division.
