The Dodge City High School Red Demon tennis team competed at its regional tournament Thursday. None of the 2008 Demons qualified for the state tournament.
In the singles bracket, Demon senior Melissa Roetzer beat Krista Schmidt, of Wichita Northwest, 6-0, 6-1 before dropping her match to Lauren Cheesborough, of Wichita North, 6-1, 6-4. Dodge sophomore lost in the first round of singles play to Jara Strickland, of Garden City, 6-2, 6-4.
In the doubles bracket, juniors Jenay Unruh and Tara Schubert defeated Garden City's Paige Russell and Aimee Bryant, 6-2, 6-1 in the first round before falling to Maize's Kylie Jobe and Kelby Deterding, 6-1, 6-1. Dodge City senior Taylor Shrader and sophomore Kylie Newton got past Wichita Northwest's Joerdis Peterman and Danielle Manchester in the first round, 6-0, 7-5, before losing to Goddard's Deedra Richard and Kara Wright, 6-4, 6-1.
Maize's Tiffany Khounsombath took first in the region in the singles bracket, and a doubles team from Maize took first in that bracket as well. The Red Demons third place in team points at the regional tournament with Wichita North and Wichita Northwest.
Maize took first as a team, and Goddard took second.
