The Dodge City Community College basketball teams hit the road to Hutch on Wednesday night to take on the Dragons in their 2012 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference opener.
The last time these two teams saw the floor was almost a month ago, with the rust showing on one side, while the other was able to rally from a 10-point second half deficit to clinch the victory.
The Lady Conqs knew going into the matchup with Hutchinson that they had their work cut out for them, with the Lady Dragons currently ranked number three in the nation with a perfect 13-0 record.
Couple their strong play with Dodge's bumps and bruises coming into the game, it created a perfect mixture for a long night for head coach Lucas McDonald and his squad.
The closest the Conqs would get would come three minutes into the contest, when Je'nae Strong stroked in a three-point basket off of a Jazmin Villa assist, making the score 5-4 in favor of the home Dragons.
Things would go downhill very fast as the first half progressed for the Conqs.
With the score 10-4 Hutchinson, the Dragons reeled off a 16-0 run to give them an insurmountable 22-point cushion, which became 30 by the end of the first half.
Dodge City would wind up shooting 35 percent from the field throughout the contest as the Dragons shot 52 percent to walk away with a 104-43 victory.
They were led by Strong who had a game-high 22 points, which included four three-point buckets. She would also throw in four rebounds and two steals for the Conqs, who dropped to 8-7 overall and 0-1 in the KJCCC.
As for the men, their impressive showing during the first half of the season had a sour end after a loss to Labette sent them into their break looking for more.
Just like the women, the guys had no easy matchup with the Dragons, who sported a 13-1 record coming into the game against the Conqs who sat at 12-2 under head coach Brady Trenkle.
The game began well for the Conqs as they went up by six on two different occasions thanks to a Tramel White field goal and two R.J. McGhee free throws.
However, Hutchinson would fight their way back into the game, reclaiming the lead at 18-17 on a Mark Braden basket. A Clarence Willard three pointer would swing the momentum back in Dodge's favor, giving them a one-point advantage with 7:29 left in the first half.
Despite that shift, the Dragons would add onto their lead, stretching it to as much as five deep into the first half.
A tenacious Conqusitador squad would scratch and claw their way back to bring the halftime deficit to one, even though Hutchinson sank a last second field goal to give them that lead.
The second half would begin inauspiciously for Trenkle and his team as the Dragons came out with guns ablaze, taking advantage of Dodge City foul trouble and their own hot hand, pushing the lead up to nine points just four minutes into the half.
But behind the solid play of White and Willard, the Conqs chipped away at that lead, bringing it to 51-47 with 14 minutes left to play. But with just under 10 minutes left, the Dragons were able to push their lead to the biggest of the game after an AJ Spencer free throw made it 64-54.
The cardiac Conqs would lay down for no one on this night.
A James Milton slam off of a Willard assist brought the deficit to only three as the wind began to leave the Dragons' sails.
With 1:52 remaining, White nailed a jumper to reclaim the lead for the Conqs and they would never look back, using quick hands on defense to secure their 13th win of the season.
The Conqs were led by White who poured in a game-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Also scoring in double figures was Willard with 12 points (eight rebounds) and Chekeil Wright with 10 points (four assists and four steals).
Dodge City was able to fire 49 percent from the court and were able to overcome 34 free throw attempts from the Dragons, as Hutchinson could only make 20 of those attempts.
With the win, the Conqs improve to 13-2 overall and 1-0 in the KJCCC while the Dragons are now 13-2 and 0-1 in the conference.
The two squads will return back to Dodge for their first home game in a month as they take on Barton County on Jan. 7 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. inside the United Wireless Arena.
The Lady Cougars come into the game with a 10-5 record, while the men are 14-1, setting up a clash between KJCCC giants on the hardwood come Saturday night.
