Shawnee Mission South, which lost to Dodge City in the opening round of the Tournament of Champions on Thursday, won its last two games to take fourth place.
On Saturday, the Raiders rolled past the Manhattan Indians, 55-31.
South guards Will Spradling and Jake Reid led the Raiders in scoring with 13 points apiece.
Spradling, who carried the Raiders in a triple-overtime losers’ bracket win on Friday, scoring 30 points, was named to the all-tournament team.
Guard Zach Nelson, who led Manhattan with 13 points, was also selected to the all-tourney team.
But the Indians were punchless offensively, leading to their demise.
“The things that we’ve been bad at this weekend is not a skill thing,” Manhattan coach Brooks said of his team, which finished 1-2 in the TOC. “It’s a heart-and-desire thing.
“Blocking people out and diving on the floor and forcing turnovers.”
South owned a 29-23 rebounding edge over Manhattan.
“We’ve given up double-digit offensive rebounds each game,” Brooks said. “You’re not going to win any ballgames doing that. We were fortunate enough to make shots (in Friday’s win over Hays).
“I know we’re not a big team, so you’ve got to put somebody on their backside.
I didn’t think we were just awful against Wichita Heights, but today we were bad. It’s the third day, and that’s where you have to be mentally and physically tough. The only time we’re physically and mentally tough is when we’re making shots.”
Wichita East 54, Hays 48
DODGE CITY — To show the caliber of the Tournament of Champions, the No. 3-ranked team in Class 5A and the 6A No. 4-ranked team were relegated to the seventh-place game Saturday.
5A Hays, which entered the TOC with the top record of any team in the elite eight-team field at 8-1, found itself trying to avoid going 0-3 in the tournament.
6A Wichita East wasn't about to be accommodating to the Indians (8-4), who fell to the Blue Aces 54-48 at the Dodge City Civic Center.
It was the first such seventh-place game at the TOC that Hays has played in since 2000.
"That's the only time I can remember being in it," Hays coach Rick Keltnter said of being relegated to the matinee session. "We went on and made it to the Final Four of the (Class 5A) state tournament that year.
"Coach Watts said something on the lines that every year somebody goes 0-3 in this tournament and goes on to the state tournament. You're not going to come here and play cupcakes. What can you do? East came in state-ranked in 6A with one loss. That says how good of a team they are."
East, which entered the TOC with a 7-1 mark, improved to 8-3. It was playing without one of its best players in guard Jalen Love, who broke his left hand during a 74-68 triple-OT loss to Shawnee Mission South on Friday.
The Blue Aces had five players with eight or nine points. Nathan Jackson and Teance Walton each scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds, while Ja'ln Williams, Randall Rogers and Jalen Carter had eight apiece.
Carter also had six rebounds for East, which was outrebounded by the Indians, 33-24.
Hays shooting guard Bryant Bombardier hit 6 of 11 field goals for a game-high 15 points. He also had eight rebounds. Forward Daniel Moritz nearly had a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds."Bombardier was dropping bombs," Keltner said.
Point guard Dexter Pfeifer had seven points, five steals and four assists for the Tribe.
