The South Gray Rebel girls basketball team put up a season-high 90 points in their regional final blowout over the Rolla Pirates, who came into the game with a 17-3 record of their own.
After Rolla came out and pushed South Gray back on its heels to start the game, up 12-8 after the first five minutes of play, the Rebels responded and pushed back hard for a 90-35 win.
South Gray went on a searing 36-3 run to close the half that included the final 11 points of the first quarter and was extended to 40-3 when the Rebels scored the first two baskets of the second half.
South Gray coach Tasha Trundle said that her team played one of its most complete games of the season in the win.
“We are right where we need to be at this point in the season,” she said. “I'm happy with every part of our game. Every one of these girls stepped up in a big way.”
All eight members of the South Gray rosters scored in the game, and four Rebels made it into double figures. Kayla Thomas led all scorers in the game with 27 points from all over the court.
The Rebels caught fire from long range, created turnovers and easy baskets and even showed maturation in the post against some taller competition. Senior post Kelli Watts finished the game with 14 points around the basket.
“We're going to see some height down the road, and you've got to be willing to attack that instead of shying away from it,” Trundle said. “I'm pleased with how we did in the post for sure.”
Guard Brigit Hesser added 19 points, 15 of which came in the first half, for the Rebels in the win. The Pirates were led by Casey Barrett's 13 points and Megan Taylor's 11.
The Rebels' 46th consecutive win sets up a first-round sub-state clash with the 18-5 Pratt-Skyline Thunderbirds. The Rebels and the T-Birds will face off Thursday at Larned Middle School.
“It's going to be a big test,” Trundle said of her team's next challenge at hand. “Good teams are moving on, and it's going to be some real competition from here on out. To be the best, you've got to beat the best, and we're ready for that.”
Tipoff in Larned is slated for 6 p.m. Thursday.
