Compiling a 12-19 overall record, the Dodge City Community College men’s basketball team experienced a season of near-misses during the 2008-09 campaign
“We lost nine games by three points or less,” Dodge City coach Brady Trenkle said. “We were right there. We just didn’t have any firepower last year.”
Dodge City entertains York (Neb.) College tonight at 7:30 at the Civic Center.
The Conquistadors did have one of region’s top players last season in high-scoring freshman Rodney Clinkscales, who took his 20-points-per-game average to Southern Methodist University.
Dodge City still returns three starters to build around in lanky 6-foot-8 wing-forward Chuck Coley, 6-4 forward-post player Christian Salazar and 6-2 guard Mykael Thompson, a Dodge City High School product.
“I think they’ve all improved ... all three of them,” Trenkle said. “I thought they were three of our better players during our final five or six games (last season).
“They had a great spring, and all three of them were here over the summer. That helped a bunch, and they came into the fall ready to go with this new team.”
Coley, who hails from West Palm Beach, Fla., has already committed to the University of Pacific in Oakland, Calif., and the Big West Conference for next season.
“That’s good for him and good for our program,” Trenkle said.
Although the tallest players on the roster are 6-8 in Coley and Dodge High product Mitch Goedeken, a freshman post player, Trenkle said he expects his team to be stronger inside.
One reason is freshman Derrick Parsley, a 6-6 freshman from Salem, N.J.
“This year we have a post presence and last year, we didn’t have a post presence,” Trenkle said.
The Conqs (1-0) opened their season Monday night with a 80-66 victory over the Colorado Christian junior varsity, which happened to bring five varsity players along for the trip.
Parsley poured in 20 points on 9-of-10 field-goal shooting and 2-of-5 free-throw shooting to lead Dodge City in the opener.
Guard Jordan Wilcox,  a freshman from Holcomb, added 19 points and four assists.
“He’s one of those kids that could lead the conference in 3-point attempts and 3-point makes,” Trenkle said of Wilcox, who made 5-of-7 3s against the Colorado Christian JV. “He has no conscience, and that’s what I love about him.
“He’s a specialist, and you’ve got to have specialists.”
Salazar added 13 points and Coley scored 10.
Thompson, a hometown favorite, brings athleticism to the backcourt, complementing projected starter Bruce Massey Jr., a 6-3 freshman from Germantown, Md.
“Mykael is an unbelievable athlete,” Trenkle said. “I call him a freak because he’s so naturally gifted and he’s smooth.
“He’s more than capable of taking over a game whenever he wants to. He’s got the talent level to do it.”

Dodge City’s women, coming off a 71-66 loss to the Colorado Christian  JV on Monday, play the  Southwestern College JV in Winfield on Friday.
