Trailing Salina Central 46-45 and the game clock melting, Dodge City guard Rico Hogan found a way to score Friday night.
Hogan's go-ahead basket with 21.9 seconds left propelled the Red Demons to a 47-46 season-opening victory at the DCHS Field House.
Hogan, who struggled throughout on his shooting, missing 13 of his first 17 shots from the floor, hit the one that counted most, kniving into the lane and hitting a floater for the eventual game-winner.
"We were going to have him back out and set something up," Dodge City head coach Dennis Hamilton said. "But he found a seam and got to the basket. We'll take it.
"There was a lot of intensity, and a great basketball game. Now, we have to do it again (tonight)."
Dodge City, ranked No. 8 in Class 6A by the preseason poll by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, entertains unranked Manhattan approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the DCHS-Manhattan girls' game, which starts at 6.
