The Dodge City Community College football team traveled to Colorado Springs, Colo., this past weekend to take on Air Force Prep for its final regular-season matchup before heading into the playoffs next week against perennial power Butler.
Despite a solid effort from sophomore quarterback Bryan Parnes, the Conqs could not escape an early deficit as Prep defeated Dodge 46-34.
The Conqs would lead 7-0 after the first quarter, but Air Force Prep would explode for 22 second quarter points to pull ahead 22-14 by halftime.
Parnes would light it up through the air and on the ground, going 31-of-53 for 315 yards and two touchdowns while running the ball nine times for 108 yards and three scores. He would account for all five of the Conq touchdowns.
Logan Stephens, coming off his Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Player of the Week effort against Garden City, continued his stellar play by leading DC3 in receiving. He nabbed 10 passes for 127 yards and one touchdown, with a long reception of 69 yards.
Also catching a touchdown pass from Parnes was Ervin Swonger, who finished with four catches for 50 yards.
According to the official stat sheet, Parnes not only made it happen through the passing game and with his legs, he also connected on a 74-yard punt in Colorado's thin air.
Leading the way defensively for the Conqs was Chris Lipscomb, who had 17 solo tackles, a fumble caused and a pass breakup. Also in the mix for Dodge was Bradley Halblieb, who connected on 16 solo tackles — one for a loss — a fumble caused and a pass breakup.
The Conq defense would intercept two passes: one from Shawn Smith for no return, and one from Coltin Ghumm, who returned his for 19 yards.
The loss for Dodge City drops the Conqs to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in the KJCCC. The squad will travel to Butler Community College next Sunday for the first round of the playoffs.
