Dodge City High School head football coach Justin Burke wasn’t available to chat over the weekend.
After all, it was the opening weekend of pheasant hunting in the state.
Finally reached on his cell phone late Sunday afternoon, Burke was unable to talk as he was getting ready to venture down a fence row on an undisclosed fertile hunting ground.
Burke’s Red Demons were eliminated during a second-round game of the Class 6A state playoffs Friday night, losing to host Derby, 19-7.
The Demons, who finished 8-3 on the season, won a state playoff game for the first time since 1994, when they beat Topeka High, 35-14, on Friday, Nov. 6.
Ironically, Derby also beat the Demons in the second round back in 1994.
Ironically, the Panthers also scored 19 points in that game, shutting out the Demons 19-0.
