Dodge City —

The Dodge City Red Demons boys golf team didn't have an answer Monday to conquering Shadow Glen Golf Course at the Class 6A boys golf state tournament.
The Red Demons finished tied for 11th in the tournament in Olathe, shooting a 354 in their season finale.
“It was a real tough course. It's a pretty intimidating course,” said DCHS head coach Jim Mapel. “The rough was really penal. If you landed in it, you lost a stroke or two. It was fair, but it was difficult, but I'd say the worst part was the rough.”
DCHS golfer Jarret Tagtmeyer finished 17th in the individual standings with an 80. He was the only Demon to shoot in the top 20 and receive a medal. Other scores for the Demons included an 83 by Aaron Mapel, a 93 for Mitchell Goedeken, a 98 for Brennan Savage and 106 for Zach Schneweis. Mykael Thompson was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
Despite the way the season finished, coach Mapel said the team was able to accomplish a lot. The Demons will lose Tagtmeyer, Aaron Mapel, Schneweis and Thompson to graduation.
“We had a real good season,” coach Mapel said. “We won three tournament and were second in the league and second in the regional. We're going to be looking for some players (next year). Brennan and Mitchell will be strong players coming back, but we'll be looking for some players to step up.”
Shawnee Mission East won the tournament with a 307, five shots better than Blue Valley West. Manhattan was third at 315, followed by Washburn Rural (318), Blue Valley North (322) and Olathe South (333). Maize and Olathe Northwest tied for seventh (338), followed by Goddard (345) and Olathe East (347). Dodge City and Wichita Southeast tied to close out the scoring.
Curtis Yonke of Blue Valley West won a playoff over Harry Higgs of Blue Valley North and Joe Lynch of Shawnee Mission East to win the individual state title after all three shot 74. Higgs was second and Lynch third.
Tommy Kennedy of Shawnee Mission East was fourth at 76, and Brax Ball of Washburn Rural beat two other golfers in a playoff to finish fifth with a 77.
