Following two blowout losses to start the season, the Dodge City Community College football team is getting "back to basics," head coach Bob Majeski said.
No better time than a bye week.
The Conqs, who lost 53-21 at Cisco College Aug. 28 and 72-7 at Coffeyville last Saturday, have this weekend off. On Sept. 18, DCCC will host Independence in the Conqs' home opener.
DCCC and Independence were picked 7th and 8th respectively in the preseason Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference coaches poll.
Independence defeated DCCC 51-21 in 2009.
Majeski said he wants his players to know their 2010 season will not be defined by two games.
"I told them, 'It's a long season. We have a lot of time to improve,'" he said. "We're going to continue to play hard. I don't think we're as far away as the scores say."
Independence has already shown signs of improvement itself, especially in executing its triple-option offense, Majeski said. Majeski said he had no plans to make any personnel changes over the next week.
He said the bye week would be immensely helpful to the Conqs.
"I think it's going to help us a tremendous amount," Majeski said. "We'll figure out, as coaches, how to stop mistakes that are happening."
